What to wear to your photo shoot

Wondering what to wear for your photo shoot? We get asked this question often, and for good reason! Family photos are a moment saved in time, and treasured for years to come so it's no surprise that we all want to look our best. Here are a few tips and guidelines to help you:

  • Be yourself. Make sure everyone feels comfortable in their clothing to ensure those genuine smiles.

  • Coordinate colors (but don't match). Subtle prints, rich colors, and textures add visual interest to your photographs.  Avoid overly bright colors (i.e. neons) as they will reflect on your skin. Don't choose colors that camouflage you into the background (don't wear red if you're going to be standing in front of a red barn.)

  • Tie outfits together. Lay out your outfits next to each other to see how they work as a group. Then have fun & add a few accessories (think jewelry, scarves, hats, etc.)

  • Consider the location. Urban? Outside? Formal? Casual? Be sure your outfits make sense in your location.

  • Choose timeless pieces and your photographs will have longer staying power. Trends will come and go. Avoid clothing with logos, large graphics, or distracting patterns on them.

  • Plan ahead. Don't wait until the day of your shoot to discover that you are missing a button on your favorite blouse, or that your son outgrew the outfit you thought he'd wear. This will also give you the chance to make sure you're not missing any essential articles of clothing.
