What to wear to your photo shoot

Wondering what to wear for your photo shoot? I get asked this question often, and for good reason! Choosing the right outfit for your professional headshots is crucial because your clothing communicates professionalism. Here are some key guidelines to help you:

  • Be yourself: Above all else, arrive at your shoot feeling like yourself, and feeling confident and comfortable in your clothing to ensure those genuine smiles.

  • Avoid distractions: Stick with timeless textures and prints and avoid loud patterns. By choosing timeless accessories you will avoid dating your photo too quickly. Avoid excessive jewelry and shiny or reflective fabrics.

  • Fit matters: Ensure that clothing fits well (not too tight / not too loose.) Button-down shirts, blouses, polos, and v-necks photograph well. Consider layering for depth and structure. Avoid overly low-cut tops.

  • Dress for your industry: For corporate headshots, consider a tailored blazer, dress shirt (tie optional), or blouse. For creative or tech fields, consider a well-fitted shirt, clean sweater, a dress, or a blazer. For a tradesperson or skilled worker, choose something that shows a bit of your brand personality, or the skills you possess and keep it clean and tidy.

  • Grooming and undergarments: Make sure your undergarments are not visible through your clothing. Pay attention to grooming (hair, makeup, beard, etc.) and aim for a polished and natural look.

  • Plan ahead: Don't wait until the day of your shoot to discover that you are missing a button on your favorite blouse or that you don't have the right color belt or shoes.
